Happy August, fellow web fans! I’m here taking over the update reins from Jen to let you know about what’s going on in the world of OIT Design.
The Gutenlighenment continues ever onward! We’re getting closer to the release of WordPress 5.0 and our team has been hard at work getting ready for the transition. We’re still not sure when the update will actually drop, but conservative estimates in our new office pool say sometime between October and December.
A big part of that has been working on our custom NC State Blocks plugin, which will be an easy-to-use addition to the Gutenberg editor, allowing the user to apply blocks like Callouts and Banner Videos which are already familiar to NC State users.
We plan to roll out NC State Blocks alongside WordPress 5.0, but some intrepid staff members have already started experimenting with the plugin in some of our current projects, with significant results.
10 Years of Annual Reporting
It’s that time of year again, when departments come together to report on what they have accomplished in the past year. Or, in OIT’s case, the past ten years – we’re officially a tween!
Because Gutenberg has infiltrated every aspect of our waking lives (and definitely some of our dreams) our favorite OIT webmaster Brian decided to use it to showcase what the Office of Information Technology has accomplished in the past decade. You can see the site – and Gutenberg in action – at https://reports.oit.ncsu.edu/2017-2018/. We’re not saying it’s cool… but it’s pretty cool.
Wildlife Release Program
We’re always working on websites over in our WordPress zoo and we’ve got several that will be released back into their natural habitat in the next month or two. You’ll be able to witness the natural majesty of the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course site, alongside such other wondrous beasts as WolfBytes Radio’s revamp and the delightful plumage of the Parks Scholarships new platform, among others. Keep an eye out!
That’s it for this month, but I’ll be back with a new semester update in September! Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the next few WordPress updates; there have been some Dashboard alerts that Gutenberg is coming. If you have questions, or decide to take the dive and start testing with the Gutenberg plugin, let us know!
